Now learn a parable of the fig tree;

( Israel )

When his branch is yet tender,

( May 1948 Israel returns as a state )

And putteth forth leaves,

( June 1967 Israel recaptures Jerusalem )

Ye know that summer is nigh:

( Last Days )

So likewise ye, (Israel) when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors
( Last Days = Second Coming )

Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

My question is how long is a generation?

Well let's see.....Do we believe what Peter says about it? The end of the world will be suddenly. "as a thief in the night" Peter says. It is all right there in 2Peter 3:9 thru 10. Describes elements melting .....and the EARTH and the works therein shall be BURNED up...." And then he says we then "look for a new heaven and a new earth..wherein dwells righteousness"...
Now ask this question: is this going to happen after a 1000 yr reign of Christ on earth? Well no...for Peter says in verse 11.."seeing then that all these things shall be disolved, WHAT MANNER OF PERSONS OUGHT YE TO BE IN ALL HOLINESS AND CONVERSATION IN GODLINESS." Then Peter goes on and says people are to "look for" the same things he describes in the preceding verses. Reading this one does not see the people who are to look for it being people who would live at the close of a millennium...a people who have gone through a Gog and Mago War, an Armageddon. It seems obvious to me Peter is thinking of the people to whom he was writing....or to people who will be in any generation....people like us....who will experience Jesus coming in judgment...as a thief (as Paul too describes it...1st Thess 5: 2-3). As I study other parts of the Bible I find the end will be immanent. Will be sudden.
